Ever had one of those cold nights when a blanket just wasn’t enough? Or need to cover your bed and make it look nice for visitors? Or do you just like that fluffy feel to lounge on top of? If so, you probably have used comforters and bedspreads before.
A comforter is a very thick kind of blanket. Instead of being built like a blanket, in one thick layer, it is built more like a coat, with a shell on the outside and filling on the inside. The filling can be either synthetic materials like polyester batting, or natural materials such as silk, wool, or down feathers. The outer layer or shell is usually polyester or a natural fiber like cotton or silk. For example, a common natural combination would be a cotton shell and down feather filling.
A bedspread, on the other hand, isn’t created to keep you warm. Its function is to cover the bed all the way to the floor. Bedspreads can be made of polyester materials, cotton, wool, or silk, and often have ornate designs or artwork to enhance the appearance of your bed.
Bedspreads and comforters are sold at many major retailers. Stores like Bed, Bath, and Beyond specialize in bedspreads, comforters, and all bedding. Others, such as Macy’s or Dillard’s, carry upscale bedspreads and comforters. A full set of bedding in a popular store can range as low as $50 to as high as $1,000, depending on the quality and where you buy them. One bedspread or comforter from a major outlet can be as low as $20 or as high as $300.
Why such a disparity in price? Some of it is quality, and some of it is just the higher cost for “upscale” brands. If you look hard enough, you can sometimes find great bargains where you are getting a high-quality comforter or bedspread that would sell for $300 at an upscale store like Macy’s for as low as $50 from an “off-brand” vendor.
Generally, though, the more money you pay, the nicer the materials, and the more natural. Eider down costs more than polyester, but both will keep you toasty warm. Ultimately, when it comes to comforters and bedspreads, there are plenty of choices, whether you want something high-end to show off, or just something to keep you warm on those cold nights.
